
Frederick- Cross Country and Track Coaches from three counties joined several expert speakers to hear about effective training regimens and prevention of running injuries. Dr. Jeff Gilsdorf, an orthopedic surgeon and avid fitness runner on the medical staff of Mid-Maryland Musculoskeletal Institute (http://mmidocs.com), provided an overview of common running injuries including overuse injuries and stress fracture. Dr. Gilsdorf specializes in diagnosing and treating sports injuries.
As part of its Sports Medicine Program, MMI offers regular education to athletes of all ages, abilities and sports-specific groups such as gymnasts, soccer teams, cheerleading and others.
Brent Ayer, Head Coach for Cross Country and Track at Hood College (http://hoodathletics.com) spoke on training strategies based on scientific principals and his years as a competitive runner and coach. Ayer was recently named President of Road Runners Club of America, a nonprofit organization comprised of over 700 running clubs across the country that promotes long distance running, both competitive and recreational.
With a distinguished coaching career at Linganore High School, fourteen Maryland State Champion teams and over twenty individual Maryland
State Champions, John Grim shared his expertise on both training and motivating youth runners. Grim presented a model of training called Periodization; a three-phase model of preparation, competition and rest.
Rebeccah Perednis, from If the Shoe Fits (http://www.iftheshoefits.biz), a shoe outfitter to competitive runners throughout Maryland, discussed proper cross country and distance footwear. While noting that some common aches and pains associated with competitive
running can be related to improper footwear, Perednis shared her expertise on selecting a correct shoe type and use of shoe inserts for additional support.
