MMI's Rehab Staff Continue Their Quality Improvement Initiative

October 20, 2009

The Mid Maryland Musculoskeletal Institute would like to congratulate Marisa Hombach, OTR/L, CHT on her recent accomplishment of becoming a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT). The CHT is a formal mechanism of documenting this specialty training and it requires continued education so the therapist continues to improve their skills. The CHT credential offers assurance to the public that the therapist treating them has achieved the highest recognition of competency in the profession of upper quarter therapy. To become a CHT one must complete five years of clinical experience as an occupational or physical therapist, a minimum of 4,000 hours in direct practice in hand therapy, and successful completion of an exam testing knowledge of advanced clinical skills and theory regarding upper quarter rehabilitation. There are approximately only 5,200 individuals worldwide that hold this certification and distinction.

Marisa has been a member of the MMI team for four years and works very closely with Donna Pendleton, PT, CHT and Joyce Yeary OTR/L, CHT as well as Dr. Kristin Nesbitt, who is an orthopaedic surgeon with specialty training in the hand and upper extremity. MMI has adopted an interdisciplinary approach to evaluation and treating hand and upper extremity conditions, which is unique in the Frederick area. Many hand surgery patients will need some type of follow up therapy to regain and improve the use of their upper extremity. The distinction of being a CHT equips the therapist with the knowledge and skills of the most innovative therapy techniques. The MMI therapists strive to give complete care to the patient that will result in the best rehabilitation.
