The Ali Ghan Shriners will host a mini-clinic at the Mid-Maryland Musculoskeletal Institute on Saturday. The clinic will run from 9 a.m. to noon at 86 Thomas Johnson Court. The Shriners, Shriner hospitals and MMI hope to give all children and their families an opportunity to seek treatment for orthopedic conditions and get the help they need. For information, call Glenn Markley at 301-696-2233.
Shriners Hospitals for Children is a 22-hospital system located throughout North America, providing specialized orthopedic care to children from infancy to 18-years of age. The first Shriners Hospital for Children was founded in 1922 in Shreveport, Louisiana. The Ali Ghan Shrine Center typically refers to the Shriners Hospitals for Children located in Philadelphia, PA. All Shriners Hospitals for Children are open to children regardless of race, religion, or relationship to a Shriner. There is never a charge to the patient or parent for any service or medical treatment received at the Shriners Hospitals.
Dr. Laura Copaken is a specialty trained Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon with experience working in the Shriners Hospital system. "During my Fellowship training in Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery I worked at the Shriners Hospital in St. Louis. It was a wonderfully educational and rewarding experience. Many children receive excellent orthopaedic care at the Shriners Hospital for Children that they otherwise would not be able to afford. The Shriners perform a great service."
Dr. Copaken was eager to volunteer to support this effort when she was contacted by the Ali Ghan Shriners representative, Noble Glenn Markley. Other physicians in the practice have volunteered their services as well. Initially the plan was to hold the clinic in the Shriners local lodge. However, "as we thought about it, we agreed the children and parents would probably be more comfortable in a medical setting, so we decided to hold it in our medical office", explains Dr. Copaken.
This is one of several volunteer opportunities by the physicians and staff at MMI according to Dr. Copaken. "Our doctors volunteer to work with various local groups including the Frederick Community Action Agency and serve as team physicians for several of the public high schools in Frederick. I am really pleased to add to that effort by helping the Shriners identify children in our community who are in need of, and eligible for, free orthopaedic care."
There will be no in depth examinations performed. Rather, children will be screened for acceptance into the Shriners Hospital System. According to Mr. Markley "of course this will also give parents an opportunity to consult with a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon, at no charge, about their child's need for orthopaedic care."
